DevLog #19

Konnichiwa! This is just a stopgap post to summarize the current state of affairs and to provide a look ahead at future posts.

Past

Almost a year ago, I began with a draft for this post, but made only a few updates and then let it slide, because I had little time and even less motiviation (see remarks in #13 and later). For archival reasons, I put the original draft here (written between 2025-11-02 and 2025-11-15):

Powershell module saoe

  • 2025-11-15: Wait-saoeTimedLoop: (new parameter & change handling of timespan)
  • 2025-11-15: Get-saoeGitStatus: Parse and return Git status information

Website

  • 2025-11-08: Added a new shortcode ‘box’ (and some SVG files for it)

Present

After some personal revaluation over the summer and a few (seemingly trivial) changes in my environment/habits, I think I found a possible way to continue.

Since I cannot (easily or seamlessly) trace my work of the last year anyway, I won’t bother to try. Instead, I will just describe my plan for the future…

Future

Time does not heal all wounds, but I can’t deny that with time, things tend to “normalize” a bit again, in a weird sense. And in the last couple of weeks, I could again spend more time on programming (in my spare time: it’s been my day-job regardless). Not as well as in the past (yet?), but hopefully that will improve, too.

So, what are my plans for future posts?

  1. The Journal will be renamed back to DevLog again:

    • 2013-07-28: Plans & Projects (category and posts #1-#7, I think; but since that’s also the name in the inital Git commit on 2019-04-14, it must be true…)
    • 2021-01-09: DevLog (category and posts #1-#8)
    • 2024-06-01: Journal (category and posts #1-#17)
    • 2026-10-06: DevLog (category and posts #1-#19)

… because in retrospect, “Journal” was a misnomer for the kind of blog posts I did and do plan to write in this category. Although not really a strict definition of it, I usually associate the term with daily entries (jour = day), with personal/private content (like a diary1).

My idea for renaming it to Journal was to “force” myself to write more, even if not about code (i.e. by pivoting to more personal stuff). But that didn’t work — and why should it? Neither am I keen on over-sharing my personal life publicly, nor did that approach help me in any way to get back into actual development. The topics here were (and are supposed to be) roughly 99% development-related and maybe 1% personal stuff.

  2. A while ago, I learned about bullet journals (resp. the Rapid Logging aspect of it). I tried it briefly (on paper), but it didn’t fit in my normal lifestyle. Nevertheless, I still like some ideas of it and want to test with customized versions, if they would work better for me in this context.

And that should be it for this edition. I’ll start afresh next time. And who knows, what the future will bring…

  1. I do in fact keep an almost daily handwritten paper journal for my of personal and emotional thoughts and feelings since late 2023. Which actually surprises me: I’ve tried it occassionally before and it never stuck with me. But with the sad causes in recent years, it does indeed help me. ↩︎
